    Purity With Purpose

Ashley of the The Kitchen Garden is a wife, mother, and first time homesteader. “The first thing we built was 6 raised beds to house our kitchen garden -everything we would need or want to use on a daily basis in our home. My long standing interest in essential oils and non-toxic beauty was accelerated living in a place where things flourished; grew beautifully, abundantly, and without chemicals. I was fascinated with the medicinal properties of so many of the vibrant and prolific herbs, flowers, and plants. I began making tinctures, first aid salves, and oils for my skin and face. Things that I have grown organically and infused in clean and pure oils, became the basis for really effective products. It felt empowering to know exactly what I was putting on my family’s skin and ultimately into our bodies.”The Kitchen Garden– Handcrafting clean health + beauty products- small batch, pure ingredients.

I have used The kitchen Garden products in my home for over six months and I have seen tremendous success with Ashley’s hand oil! “These rich oils give overworked hands the nourishmentt they need. • Chicago-Style Sourdough Deep Dish Pizza Crust

Chicago-Style Sourdough Deep Dish Pizza Crust

Just in time for national pizza day, a meat lovers Chicago-style deep dish sourdough pizza, the whole family will be begging you to make every Friday night!

I’ve been on a sourdough kick lately. Trying all the different recipes. Including bread, bagels, coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies, focaccia, you name it. Although it was the focaccia loaf that really stood out to our family! “This would make the perfect deep dish pizza crust.” It reminded me of a short trip I took to Chicago, where I had the opportunity to try real Chicago pizza!

The trip was such a fun experience as I got to meet so many Instagram accounts I followed from the crochet and knitting world. And eat all the Chicago pizza my stomach could hold! Coming home from that trip, I talked a lot about how different the pizza was there, compared to California, but I never even thought to try making it for my family!

That was until we had focaccia! This bread makes the perfect Chicago-style deep dish pizza crust and today I am sharing how I make a Chicago-style sourdough deep dish meat loaves pizza. A copycat recipe of sort or the best representation I can create in my own kitchen to mimic the amazing experience I had in Chicago at Giordano’s.

This recipe makes 2 medium pizzas! Use whatever toppings your family loves. If you’re looking for a Chicago style meat lovers, I added bacon, sausage and pepperoni. I would have added Canadian bacon as well, if I could find it at the store. Be sure to slice your bacon into small stripes and cook fully, along with the sausage before topping your pizza. P.s: I used Jimmy deans regular tubbed breakfast sausage.

Once your dough has risen and is ready to bake, drizzle with olive oil and push your fingers into the dough. Next add your toppings. I like to add a layer of pizza sauce, cheese and toppings, then press it into the dough and create layers upon layers of sauce, cheese and toppings.

    Ingredients:

    • 2 cups filtered water
    • 1 cup active sourdough starter
    • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
    • 5 cups flour
    • 3-5 tbsp olive oil

Notes: You could use this recipe for a one pan pizza, but you risk everything overflowing and a very very thick crust.

    Directions:

    1.  Mix water, starter, salt and flour the morning of, in a stand mixer.
    2.  Place in a glass bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes.
    3.  Stretch & fold 6 times. Let rest until it doubles in size.
    4.  Oil 2 cast iron pans with 1-2 tbsps each.
    5.  Take you dough out of the glass jar and split into 2 cast iron pans.
    6.  Let your dough rise again, approximately 4-6 hours
    7.  Drizzle with olive oil and push your fingers into the dough.
    8.  I like to add a layer of pizza sauce, cheese and topping, then press it into the dough and create layers of sauce, cheese and toppings.
    9. Bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes.

ENJOY! And recreate every Friday night. I know this will definitely become a Friday night tradition for our family!

  • Farmhouse Crochet Tea Towel Holder

A simple farmhouse DIY, perfect for hanging beautiful tea towels.

In the past I would crochet the tops of my towels, so that I could hang them on the oven door. This meant I would have to take the time to crochet the tops, every time I bought a new towel. Of course I could just hang the towel through the oven door but it always looked like a mess, as I would quickly try and stuff the towel over then handle while cooking.

I picked twine to make this tea towel holder because of its durability and the fact that it won’t stretch out or fray over time. I also love the simple farmhouse look it adds to the kitchen. This pattern can easily be made in under 15 minutes from start to finish, depending on how fast you crochet.

    Handmade Home Challenge

Challenge your creativity & build a purposeful home with the She’s Rooted Home- Handmade Home Challenge!

After a year (2020) filled with quarantines & cancelled plans, I found it difficult to go out and buy the items I wanted for my home & family. Empty shelves, closed stores, weeks for shipping, and home quarantining after getting sick really challenged my creativity. I had to get creative with what I already had on hand.

I thought I was creating a handmade home, but when I looked around almost everything was store-bought! And I’m not just talking about the supplies that where store-bought. I rely heavily on someone else/stores to supply our home with its daily necessities.

This eye opening year helped me dive a little deeper into my desire to live a more back to the basics lifestyle. How could I supply our home with its daily necessities & rely a little less on the store..

Yes, I understand I still need ingredients and/or supplies from the store, but how could I learn to move away from store-bought products and in return, learn how to make them myself? This doesn’t completely eliminate the need for stores, but helps me buy the supplies our family needs in bulk, while giving me the opportunity to make it myself. Which means I could continually make our household necessities every few months before needing to buy the ingredients again.

I started brainstorming items in my home that I could hand make and swap out of store-bought items. Knowing that I need accountability, I decided to tackle one project at a time, giving myself a month deadline for each one.

This is where the Handmade Home Challenge was birthed. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably discovered I love to build community! What an awesome opportunity to come alongside other women, challenge our creativity and inspire one another to build a handmade home.

This Challenge is designed to be as simple & flexible or intricate & detailed as you’d like. I carefully curated each months challenge to not only encourage you to build a more purposeful home, but to challenge your creativity. Throughout this next year, we will tackle one project a month. This will make creating a handmade home doable, while helping us stay accountable.
